IS THIS MONSTER REALLY JUST A LEGAL VERSION OF POT?
Ingesting fatty foods causes release of marijuana-like substances by nerve cells lining our gastrointestinal system. The research published in the most recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that feeding animals fatty meals caused release of endocannabinoids, natural substances analogous to the active component of the marijuana plant, which set off the positive stimulatory impulse to consume more food. This response was not seen with proteins or carbohydrates.
These findings provide biological explanation why very few of us can stop after eating only a few potato chips (remember "I bet you can't eat just one!"?). It is becoming much clearer why it is so hard to lose weight. As if it wasn't enough that we get fat eating all this junk, this junk actually manipulates our brain into wanting us to eat more of that junk. So, who's in charge here? My brain or the french fry (donut, burger, etc)? !
It is hard scientific data like these that have convinced me long ago that to be fat in our soicety is to be normal! That is, something must be wrong with you if you are not overeating high fat, high-calorie foods all around us and not becoming overweight.
Armed with this knowledge of our own biology, we can get ourselves out of this obesity trap. Protect you senses from marketing abuse; surround yourself with "safe" foods fit for human consumption – veggies, fruit, lean proteins, meal replacements and diet desserts. Let's be realistic – you will still be exposed to and marketed to all the high-calorie junk and it is up to you to be prepared and have low calorie alternatives always nearby when that urge comes over you.
